Let Me Introduce....Andy

When Andrew first started working with a speech therapist we noticed he said "ish" alot. We thought he was talking about the trash...then giraffes...and finally we realized he was talking about himself. By then he had been doing it for over six months.

And so for the last 2 years, if you asked his name, he said, "Ish". I have heard, "Ish turn" and "Ish catty" and "Ish car" as well as "Ish do it". We have worked on this forever it seems. He knew his name was Andrew and responded to it, but the way he said it was "Ish", and he was not to be swayed.

About a year ago a different speech therapist suggested we call him Andy, hoping to break the Ish habit. He adjusted to that pretty fast, but still referred to himself as Ish. For the record we never indulged him in the whole Ish thing, and used either Andrew or Andy. Finally, right before he started school this year, Andrew started referring to himself as Andy. It was a momentous day that has been 2 years in the making. Hellooooooooo Andy, goodbye Ish.
